Published by Scripta Maneant in collaboration with Marcianum Press, this work features the mosaics of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, one of the world’s greatest examples of Byzantine art. The artwork dates from the 11th to the 14th century and their rich gilded decorations earned the Basilica the name of “Golden church”.
This project is the first organic documentation of the mosaics for forty years, with images specifically photographed for this work by Sandro Vannini. Details such as pavements, tapestries, statues and other treasures are also documented photographically, as well as the decorations of arches and vaults from areas not accessible to visitors.
The photographs are used to illustrate the complete text of the Bible, presented in its latest Italian translation. The placement of individual images has been decided by a scientific committee authorized by the Procuratoria di San Marco, based on their pertinence to the text.
A first volume, already published, includes the Old Testament, while a second volume, covering the New Testament, will be released at the end of the 2013. The two volumes are not sold separately.
