This project, inspired by the Index Actorum Romanorum Pontificum, presents a survey of original Papal letters extant in Portuguese archives from the period between 1198 and 1417.
The research by Cambridge historian Peter Linehan provides transcriptions of other notable documents from this period, thereby broadening the perspective in relation to Franco Bartoloni’s original call for a country-by-country recognition and register of original Papal documents. Texts include legal and fiscal material in Portuguese language, originating from the Vatican Archives and elsewhere.
This wealth of documentary material offers an invaluable source for the study and understanding of the procedures of the Roman Church in Portugal and the history of the Church’s relationship with the Kingdom of Portugal.
