This two volume publication studies icons present in the territory of Lazio and the city of Rome. The catalogue of over 350 icons includes the complete collections of this genre conserved in the Vatican Museums and the Collegio Teutonico.
The wide coverage of this work makes it possible to appreciate the originality of icons from Late Antiquity in comparison with Byzantine works in the same area, the influx of Southern Italian paintings during the Middle-Ages, the diffusion of Cretan, Russian, and Venetian exemplars in the modern period and a revival of Medieval models during the XIX Century.
An introduction by the author describes the rich patrimony of icons in the history of Italian art, while each piece is accompanied by a commentary containing brief technical, historical and critical information.
