Casalini Libri was founded by Mario Casalini in the late 1950s as a result of interest expressed by American librarians in finding a reliable source through which to locate and acquire new Italian material, both books and journals, while still in print. The company began as a very small family firm tailored specifically to the needs of libraries. Since then it has naturally developed greatly but the service has remained strictly a library service. Today Casalini Libri, which has a permanent staff of 40, is run by Mario Casalini's eldest daughter Barbara and his son, Michele. The company has library customers throughout the world, with the result that it is now among the leading exporters of Italian publications to other countries. It has, however, always been the policy of the company that it should remain relatively small and strictly a family-owned concern in order to guarantee an accurate, personal, and personalized service with no mark-ups and no service charges. At the same time, in spite of the severe difficulties caused to larger organizations in the face of a particularly deep and extended recession, it has succeeded in maintaining its sound financial position.
