Italian Literary Classics : From the beginnings to 1900 aims to offer an accurate guide to the best editions of Italian literary classics, both major and minor, which are currently available. It comprises complete bibliographical entries for approximately 800 titles by 161 Italian writers born between 1100 and 1900. Authors and works are listed alphabetically and a chronological index of authors, arranged by century and year of birth, is included at the end of the volume to simplify consultation. Preference has been given to national editions, complete works, critical editions and editions containing notes, comments, a critical apparatus, or with ample introductory texts by scholars or other well known writers. In cases where several such editions of the same work are available at varying prices, more than one may be listed to allow a choice without sacrificing quality. By the same token, good editions of individual works and anthologies of works are also included as alternatives to the more costly editions of complete works.
